ROLE/FUNCTION
The major role/function of the Department is to promote the states rich cultural heritage in the form of caves, waterfalls, lakes, rare flora and fauna to name a few. The dept. also preserve and promotes a unique blend of cultures, lifestyles, sports, dances and festival of indigenous people such as Wangala dance of the Garos, Nongkrem Dance, Shad suk mynsiem, Behdienklam, etc.

Meghalaya Tourism homestay scheme.
The Meghalaya tourism homestay scheme of the govt. of Meghalaya is a convergence between tourism dept. And prime minister employment generation scheme (PMEGP) for generation of the employment opportunities in the state of Meghalaya through the establishment of tourist infrastructure such as homestay, restaurants (dhabas/wayside amenities) and crafts emporium.
The Meghalaya tourism homestay scheme is implemented by the tourism department in collaboration with the district commerce and Industries department, Govt. of Meghalaya as the partner agency for support related to PMEGGP.
