DISTRICT PRISON & CORRECTIONAL SERVICES, WILLIAMNAGAR
The office of the District Prison & Correctional Services, Williamnagar was inaugurated by Hon’bleShriSalseng C Marak, Chairman, State planning Board, Meghalaya on 16th May 1992 in the presence of Hon’bleShriNorwin B Sangma, Home Minister.District Prison & Correctional Services, Williamnagarcomes under the control of the DG/IG Prisons, Shillong. The Superintendent of District Prison & Correctional Services, Williamnagar is the Head of the Department at the District Level.As the name suggest, the main aim of the Prisons department is to reform and correct every individual who comes to Prison for the misdeeds they may have done. Prison department aims to rectify and renew an individual who was once a hardened criminal and bring out the good from that particular individual. This department also aims to rehabilitate and provide skills like craft/carpentry etc. for prisoners so that they make a living for themselves once they are released from the Prison. It also aims to minimise the crime in the district and provide a peaceful environment for the public.
ROLE
(a) Superintendent:
The Superintendent is the Drawing and Disbursing officer within the district level. The main role of the Superintendent is to supervise and monitor the administration works, development activities and proper functioning of Jail. His role is to make sure that every work including Court matters, administration works, budget matters etc is executed out smoothly.
(b) Deputy Superintendent/Jailor:
The Deputy Superintendent/Jailor is the Chief Executive Officer of the Prisons within the district level. All the administration works, budget, implementation of works, development activities are executed out by the said Officer. His role is to make sure that peace and harmony prevails within the Jail. He is to make sure that Jail is open and closed on time. He is to ensure that the office works are carried out smoothly. He is to make sure that all the staffs are performing their duties well.He is to maintain the health and hygiene of the prisoners and Jail complex. He is to ensure that no Jail break occurs and to avoid death of prisoners inside the Jail.
(c) Senior Medical & Health Officer:
The main role of the Senior Medical & Health Officer is to maintain the health and hygiene of the prisoners. He is to ensure that all the Prisoners are keeping well and to monitor their health periodically. His role is to provide proper medical care to prisoners and to avoid death of prisoners in the Prison.
(d) Assistant Superintendent/Asst Jailor:
The Assistant Superintendent/Asst Jailor is below the rank of the Deputy Superintendent/ Jailor. The main role of the A.S.P/Ast Jailor is to ensure that the production of the inmates is being done regularly to the Court. His main role is to maintain Court matters and monitor the prisoner’s activities and give report regarding prisoners when necessary. His role is to assist the Jailor in maintaining the Prison matters and carry out the role of Jailor/DSP during his absence. He is to make sure that peace and harmony prevails within the Jail. He is to make sure that Jail is open and closed on time. He is also to maintain the health and hygiene of the prisoners and Jail complex. He is also to ensure that no Jail break occurs and to avoid death of prisoners inside the Jail.
SCHEMES/PROJECTS IMPLEMENTED
Funds are utilised and implemented for Prisons welfare as per funds sanctioned by the Inspector General of Prisons & Correctional Services, Shillong.
