The National Prophylaxis Programme against Nutritional Blindness due to vitamin A deficiency (NPPNB due to VAD) was started in 1970 with the specific aim of preventing nutritional blindness due to keratomalacia and to decrease the prevalence of Vitamin A deficiency. Under this scheme, all children between 6 months and 5 years were to be administered Vitamin A orally (oral prophylactic dose) once in six months.
