National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB)

The programme was launched in the year 1976 as a 100% Centrally Sponsored Programme with the goal of achieving a prevalence rate of Blindness to 0.3% of population. It is now included in the umbrella of the NHM. The programme aims at strengthening service delivery, developing human resources for eye care, prompting outreach activities and public awareness and developing institutions. The implementation of the Programme was decentralized in 1994-1995 with the formation of District Blindness Control Societies under the District Health Society (Blindness Division) where the funds were released directly to them. The DBCS ies and SBCS under the State Health Society.
